Early November at Phoenix College - Main Campus

Come celebrate National STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) day with us.  

Each year we hold the celebration near the date of Nov 8 (national STEAM Day).

This event is free and welcomes current and future students, their families, community members, alumni, faculty, industry and community partners.  

One day of celebration is an in-person resource fair with interactive activities.  The other day hosts virtual sessions with invited experet from the STEAM fields. 

There are several interactive activities throughout the day celebrating the STEAM fields. We highlight STEAM Careers and STEAM programs, research, internship opportunities, and other exciting events all happening at Phoenix College.

Calculus: The Great Musical Math-Off! at PC

Calculus: The Great Musical Math-Off!    

Join us for the next iteration of Calculus: The Musical!  A refreshed musical score and plotline are sure to keep you in stitches.

Bitter rivals Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz face off for the ultimate competitive journey through the peaks and troughs of higher math. Will one prevail as the integral inventor of Calculus, or will they both prove to be derivative? 

Featuring musical tributes to pop idols past and present, this comic math review covers all major concepts of Calculus I, with more than a few surprises!

TEC is for Girls! Conference

TEC is for Girls! brings together 250 young women from our middle schools to Phoenix College. Our goal is to help increase the number of underrepresented females in technology and science fields by providing a supportive environment for these young women to participate in fun, hands-on experiences and explore technological careers.

We would like to invite our STEAM faculty and student experts on campus to participate in our mission by delivering an engaging workshop in their field. There will be three workshops.

PC Students win 1st place in Academy of Science meeting

PC Waeso and NSF-TRAIN students won first place at the Spring 2019 Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science meeting in Yuma, Arizona.

The team members are:

Internship Highlight - NASA Psyche Inspired Showcase

National Student Mathematics League Competition

The National Student Mathematics League Competition is back for Round 2!

Sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, the 1st place winner in the nation wins a $3000 scholarship.

1st place winner at Phoenix College wins a TI-84 Calculator
2nd place winner at Phoenix College wins a TI Scientific Calculator
3rd place winner at Phoenix College wins a $10 Starbucks card

What's involved:
You take 20-question multiple-choice test in college level math.  Several questions on the test require you to think creatively outside of the box.

When:
Wednesday, February 27
2:45 pm to 4:15 pm
Check in at 2:45 pm

Where:
The rooms for the AMATYC student competition are B210 and B208.

Remember that the competition is a week from today, Wed. 27 February 2019, from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Hermanas Student Conference at PC

Our Hermanas Conference will bring together 250 Latina girls from grades 7-12 from our schools at Phoenix College. The conference hosts students choosing to go to college by providing a supportive environment for these young women to participate in fun, hands-on STEAM education experiences and explore technological careers.

Mathematics Conference

Spring 2019 ArizMATYC Conference

Friday, February 8 at Phoenix College

Join mathematics faculty from throughout the Southwest for the Spring 2019 ArizMATYC Conference. The conference will be held at the Main Campus of Phoenix College on Friday, February 8. To kick off this amazing conference, Calculus: the Musical! will playing on Thursday, February 7th at 7:00 pm for a special engagement at the Bullpitt Auditorium. This special engagement is free to the public.

Additional information about this conference and a link to register can be found at the ArizMATYC website http://arizmatyc.org/ . General registration is $30 and $5 for students.  We encourage you to share information about the conference with interested students.

Keynote Speaker

The keynote at the Spring 2019 conference will given by Dr. Uri Treisman.  Philip Uri Treisman is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor, professor of mathematics, and professor of public affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the founder and executive director of the University’s Charles A. Dana Center, an organized research unit of the College of Natural Sciences.

Professor Treisman has received numerous honors and awards for his efforts to strengthen American education. For his research at the University of California at Berkeley of the factors that support high achievement among minority students in calculus, he received the 1987 Charles A. Dana Award for Pioneering Achievement in American Higher Education. In 1992, he was named a MacArthur fellow.
