Internship Opportunity: NASA's Psyche Inspired Initiative for Students

Would you like to participate in an internship connected to NASA space missions?  The NASA Psyche Internship is a perfect opportunity for you! 

Psyche is both the name of an asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter — and the name of a NASA space mission to visit it, lead by Arizona State University.  This mission will take a spacecraft to a previously unexplored type of world composed entirely of metal.

What is NASA's Psyche Inspired Initiative?

Psyche Inspired is a program that brings undergraduates together to share the excitement, innovation, and scientific and engineering content of NASA’s Psyche mission with the public through artistic and creative works. Full-time, enrolled undergraduate students from the universities and community colleges in the United States and its territories can apply to become part of this year’s cohort of creative interns.

Me, Really?  But I Don't Have The Academic Background....

Do you enjoy doing creative things?  Then yes - you!  NASA Psyche Inspired interns come from a variety of backgrounds and majors - you don't need to be an art or a science major.  Last year, a Phoenix College student applied to this competitive internship and became a member of the Psyche Inspired cohort (Iron class).  To learn more about last year's team of interns, click here.

What are the benefits of being a Psyche Inspired intern?

Psyche Inspired interns will be supplied with a stipend of $250 per intern to purchase materials needed to create their works (art supplies, computer software, crafting materials, etc.)

Psyche Inspired interns will have their work highlighted on the official Psyche mission website, blog, and/or social media accounts at least once per project.

Psyche Inspired interns will have their work exhibited in an online showcase with distributed campus participation in late spring 2020.

Psyche Inspired interns will have their work showcased in a printed coffee table book and receive a copy of the book.

Psyche Inspired interns will have their work archived in an online portfolio.

Psyche Inspired interns may have their work presented and highlighted in Psyche presentations and exhibited at conferences, libraries, Psyche partner universities, NASA Centers, and at public events.

LEAP Program Scholarship

Would you like to do scientific research in a real laboratory?  The LEAP Scholars Program is a perfect opportunity for you.

 

What is the LEAP Scholars program?

LEAP is a four-semester-long program for incoming, community college transfer students. LEAP scholars will learn about undergraduate research, conduct research in an ASU faculty member’s lab, mentor incoming LEAP scholars, and present research to the scientific community.

Do LEAP students receive a scholarship?

Yes. By participating in the program, LEAP scholars receive a $3,000 scholarship per semester for a maximum of four semesters.

What do I need to complete the application?

• Career statement describing how you believe the program will benefit your future career (500-word maximum)
• Unofficial transcript must be uploaded to the online application by 11:59 p.m., July 1, 2019
• FASFA must be filed by 11:59 p.m., July 1, 2019
• Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a college instructor) must be emailed by the recommenders to the program coordinator by 11:59 p.m., July 1, 2019

Who is eligible to apply for the LEAP program?

To apply, you must:

• Be transferring to ASU from a community college
• Have completed at least one semester of 12 credits hours or more at community college while maintaining a 3.3 GPA
• Have completed at least 30 credit hours at community college
• Be admitted to ASU as a major in School of Life Sciences; School of Molecular Sciences; School of Earth and Space Exploration; or the Department of Physics
• Enroll in coursework full-time (12 credit hours or more) during the fall 2019, spring 2020, fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters 
• Not work at an outside job more than 12 hours per week during the fall 2019, spring 2020, fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters 
• Have a cumulative community college GPA of 3.3+
• Demonstrate financial need
• Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, national or refugee

Why should I do scientific research?

Scientific research allows you to work toward solving real-world research problems and work directly with ASU scientists who are experts in their fields.

You will learn how to think like a scientist. Becoming proficient in this skill is highly recommended if you are interested in entering graduate or professional school, including medical, dental or veterinary school. Participating in research has shown to improve student GPAs.

Internship opportunity - NEWT-REU

The NEWT-REU (short for Nanotechnology Enabled Water Treatment - Research Experience for Undergraduates) is an paid summer internship for community college students.

The Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Nanotechnology-Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT) is the first national center to develop next-generation water treatment systems enabled by nanotechnology. The aim is to enable access to suitable water almost anywhere in the world by developing high performance, easy-to-deploy systems for drinking water and industrial wastewater treatment systems enabled by nanotechnology. 

As an intern you will get a first-hand experience in this newly emerging field under the mentorship of experts in the field.

Research experience for teachers

The Nanotechnology Collaborative Infrastructure -Southwest (NCI-SW) will be accepting applications for research experiences for teachers this summer.

The 2019 programs are scheduled to begin on May 29. Additional information and application forms will be available at their website in early January.

Daniel Holder from the Mathematics department was a research participant in Summer 2018.  His experiences are highlighted here. 

Daniel and a colleague use a scanning electron microscope to image device structures at the micro- and nanoscale.
